Photo Lab#49: General Travel Photography

This is my entry for the Photo Lab#49 at the Matador U travel photography course. Photo labs are a great opportunity for photography students to get expert feedback on their photos. This photo lab’s theme is ‘General‘.

As there’s no specific theme, this time I chose to post one of my religion themed pictures. It’s one of the first pictures I took in my around the world trip and I’d like to hear comments and opinions about what story you see in the image, whether you like the picture or not (and perhaps why) and whether there are any disturbing elements or areas of improvement.

The picture was taken in a temple in the middle of Jodhpur old town the day after Diwali – I chose a wide-angle lens which allowed for a larger field of view, enhancing the perspective, and these were the settings I used:

  • Camera Canon EOS 500D
  • Exposure 0.025 sec (1/40)
  • Aperture f/4.0
  • Focal Length 10 mm
  • ISO Speed 400

Looking forward to receiving some feedback from MatadorU students and faculty members, and readers of this blog.

Hi! I like this shot – I like a busy scene like this even though it is in a place of worship. The lasy on the left is intriguing – what is she looking at? I like when a photo provokes emotion. I was wondering why you chose an Aperture of 4 though? I would have liked to see more details brought out. I am a student, new to MatadorU so just asking from my perspective. Thanks!

Hi Marina, thanks for your comment! f/4 was enough depth of field and, alongside with 400 ISO, it allowed me to achieve a high enough shutter speed. Re the lady on the left I think she was speaking with that gentleman in front of her.
